Day 1 : The Burchell’s Ox Wagon Trail

Level: Medium Technical Fast flowing Dirt roads / Jeep track

The Gysmanshoek Pass follows an historical ox wagon route dating back to the mid 1700's. This is an old gravel pass through a natural cleft in the Langeberg Mountains between Heidelberg in the South and the Little Karoo in the North.

We start this day early as the Klein Karroo is known to get Hot!! This day is a fast, flowing rollercoaster profile of farm roads and a mixture of jeep track. We will have stunning scenery of the Langeberg mountain range and good chances of seeing some Buzzards and Hawks.

Distance: 80km

Overnight in Riversdale
Day 2 : Riversdale to Heidelberg

Level: Non-Technical Fast flowing Dirt roads

We spend most of the morning in the foothills of the Langeberg mountain range and cover some distance.

We will have a Stop along the way for our famous on the go Mojoe artisan coffee brew and a bite to eat. Once everybody has had a short break we head off just past Heidelberg town to our stop over for the night to relax around a fire and have a swim in the pool to relax those legs.

Our Lodge offers extra activities like bird watching or a tractor farm tour after the days riding.

Distance: 50km

Overnight in Heidelberg
Day 3 : Grootvadersbosch Trail Network

Note:  a favourite of the African Roots MTB Adventures team.

Level : Optional Technical or non-technical trails.

The Grootvadersbosch Conservancy includes three main vegetation types, namely: fynbos, afromontane forest and lowland vegetation (including Renosterveld and Silcrete Fynbos). Of these areas, the Renosterveld is the most critically endangered. The lowland vegetation is mainly threatened by the expansion of agricultural activities, over-grazing of veld and incorrect fire regimes.

The Grootvadersbosch area has large areas of Southern Cape Afromontane forest, estimated at roughly 760 ha. The forests are confined to fire and wind sheltered sites with year-round moisture. The forests are home to many species, including a variety of bird species.

The Grootvadersbosch Conservancy is classified by Birdlife Africa as an Important Bird Area. The forest patches in the conservancy are home to several endemic birds, including Forest Buzzard, Knysna Woodpecker, Knysna Warbler and Forest Canary. Other forest species, some of which are at the western limit of their distribution, include Olive Bush-Shrike, Narina Trogon and African Crowned Eagle. The forest is also home to an endemic butterfly, which has been declared a protected wild animal. In addition, the Cape ghost frog is endemic to the conservancy forests.

We will be lucky enough to be riding through most of this vegetation on purpose built trails and hopefully see some of these mentioned animals and reptiles. 80% Singletrack.

We Have a full day access on these amazing trails, if you have some legs left you can do as much riding as you would like.
